The Standards for Safeguarding Customer Information Rule (Safeguards Rule) was created to ensure that financial institutions (which includes automotive dealerships) have the necessary security controls in place to protect the private information of their customers. Originally drafted in 2003, the Safeguards Rule was modified in 2021 to meet the changing technological landscape and address the increased threats of data breaches and ransomware attacks. Automotive Dealers have until June 9, 2023 to meet the Safeguards Compliance Standards or could face fines over $50,000 per violation.
